Fashion and its Designers
Fashion, nowadays, shows who you are, whether its a slacker or a scholar. I believe that Suzanne Collins is using this and put it into action throughout the "reign" of Cinna as a stylist for Katniss. In the critical essay that I read by Terri Clark, she wrote that Cinna used the designed clothes to appeal and twist the audience's opinion toward Katniss. The very first of interviews, Cinna made her attractive and bold. As the rebelion began to work its way to Katniss, Cinna used a strategy that was also found in present day female celebrities; to "act the demure, vulnerable lady, of course"(courtesy of Clark's words). The extravagant and unique dresses became "soft" as Katniss had described them. Though in reality, this technique has yet to be proven useful, and so it also seemed in President Snow as well.
Reading a critical essay, for the first time, I personally thought that it was a bit challenging to read. Especially since I am not a big fan of writing any sort of essay. I guess its not only that, but that I was a bit lost from time to time as well, making me re-read it (I am reluctant to admit it though). Even with these setbacks, I think I am better at understanding the critical essay than I first set eyes on it.
Fashion is a thing not many people think about when reading the Hunger Games, as so many other issues and themes are more prominent. I can honestly say I had never thought seriously about the role of fashion in this book, except of course for the whole girl-on-fire thing. I think your ideas are very intriguing (vocabulary word :). Maybe you could take it one step further, and say that in our world, fashion is such an influence, especially for people with power. Nice work!
