Gale's Goodbye

On page 48 when Gale is saying goodbye to Katniss just as he is leaving he starts to say something. “I won’t! You know I won’t! Katniss, remember I-”. I know that he was most likely saying I love you but there are so many different options. He could have easily been saying I hope you win; I will take care of your family and so many more. I think it would have been cool if when she got back he told her what he was going to say. I also would think it was cool if she stretched out that scene a little more. I think that it would add more love drama if Katniss kept thinking back to when Gale said that in the arena.
Feel free to disagree!

  1. About what you brought up in class on Monday, about you liking Peeta because it was really unordinary...I've been thinking about it, and you're totally right! The whole best-friend-into-boyfriend thing is so cliche and overdone. And about what he got cut off saying, I'm kind of glad he was because it just would have made it harder for Katniss in the arena. She would have been distracted, and when Peeta told her he loved her, she would have reacted differently.

  2. well, overall, I think Katniss and Peeta are meant for each other. Also, I agree with both of you about how Katniss would have (really) reacted differently to Peeta's love confession on the live interview before the Games if Gale's sentence was actually "I love you." And I think that the book would have a whole different outcome than it is now, compared to this inference.

  4. If Gale had finished his sentence with "I… love you" I felt that it would have given Katniss a reason to keep fighting or at least a stronger one. I know if Gale had told me he loved me I would jump up in joy, but seriously if I were in the main character's position I would fight so hard to come back to District 12 ALIVE! Even if Peeta helped her get through the arena I know that sometimes you need more than someone to tell you they love and believe in you.

If several people had told me they believed in me I would burst into tears and feel like maybe I do have hope in the arena. Gale made Katniss fight harder knowing that he was left at home alone to take care of her family. It made Katniss realize that no matter if she died or lived it would all be worth it for her sister. Gale was just another shoulder to cry on and another friend to appreciate deeply in her heart.

  5. If Gale said "I love you" to Katniss before he left, I think that the story would change completely. I agree with what Elsie said on how it would give Katniss a reason to keep fighting, but as Ms. Robbins, said Suzanne Collins put in that part as a cliff-hanger, and on purpose. Because of that, as Megan said, it really could be anything.
