Obviously, we know that Gale is feeding Prim and Katniss's mother like he promised he would. He is probably also getting some herbal medicine from the woods for Katniss's mother. But what is he doing?
Later on, in other books, we find out that the entire District 12 became a sort of big sponser for Katniss. Even Greasy Sae chipped in by claiming Gale was Katniss's cousin. Otherwise, the media would have immediatly suspected Gale to be Katniss's boyfriend, and the 'star-crossed love' in the arena would have fallen through.
In the second book, it shows Gale as eighteen, and thus working in the coal mines. So he turned eighteen, started working, took his only day off (Sunday) to provide Katniss's family with food, and then his own with food, and watched the Hunger Games. I kind of wish the book would go more in depth about his thoughts, because his character switch in Mockingjay was really surprising and no one could have seen it coming.
What character switch do you mean? How do you think Gale has changed over the course of the books?
ReplyDeleteDanLan, Gale's character has stayed consistent throughout the books. He has always hated the Capitol. He has always been good at snares and traps. He just did them on a greater level. The bomb he designed, the one that killed Prim, he did that for the sake of the Rebels. He didn't intend for it to kill Prim at all. Katniss chose Peeta in the end partly because gale's mind was twisted enough to come up with that bomb in the first place. He wanted to take the Capitol down, and he did it with violence and bloodshed. Katniss was the face of the Rebellion.
ReplyDeleteLike you, I do wish we could have heard more of Gale's thoughts while Katniss was in the arena. It would have been interesting to see his character escalate into what he becomes. Gale never changed, his dark side, which we had already seen a little bit off, became more apparent.
He was the one who said, "Killing a human isn't that much different from hunting," after all.
