On page 193, Peeta and Katniss are in the cave, and Katniss begins to explain why Thresh saved her instead of killing her: so he wouldn't "owe" her anything. As Katniss explains, there comes a point when she brings up the story of Peeta giving her bread (burned purposely) and how she always feels like she will "never seem to get over owing...(Peeta)...for that." After Peeta says that she doesn't owe him anything since she "just brought...(him)...back from the dead," Katniss asks why he gave her the bread in the first place.
His reply, which I was most baffled by, was "Haymitch said you would take a lot of convincing." Katniss was confused as well, and when she asked about how Haymitch was part of it, Peeta quickly replied with "Nothing." This got my brain going. Is Peeta acting his love as well? Was my first thought after reading the part. Then came: Was the reaping all planneed out, then? Did they know that Katniss was going to volunteer for Prim? Was Peeta's name also planned out for the Reaping?
I'm not sure if this was the intentional meaning that Suzanne Collins was trying to show through the conversation, but it did seem clear that the "star crossed lovers" was fake. And if the sponsors and the audience didn't see it, the two just bearely made it out, especially since in the second book, President Snow metaphorically said that some people didn't buy their "act"...
I disagree in some parts. I feel as though in the end Haymitch was the one who had planned almost everything. From the start Haymitch knew how to keep up facades and how to organize Katniss and Peeta so they could have a better chance to live. He in the end was the one to help move the plot along and keep Katniss and Peeta alive.
ReplyDeleteAs for knowing if the Capitol knew if Katniss would take the place of her sister, no one knew. President Snow was only hoping that the Hunger Games would attack and destroy every family. They probably knew someone would take someone’s place in a drawl. For example in district 2 or 3 they fight over who goes into the Hunger Games.
Personally I think the Capitol is sick and twisted. They show no mercy therefore they are inhuman. They don't know the true meaning of family. They just think everything is a facade not an act out of love or even friendship.
