Love...sort-of?

The way that Peeta is described in this book is really fishy. I believe that Suzanne Collins portrays him as a character that acts as if he is a certain way, but truly feels differently. Kind of like he's being controlled. There are a couple parts in this book that did make me feel this way.
For example, on page 135 of the book, Peeta “claimed his love for Katniss” but the way he said it, and what he said afterward, it made me think that he wasn’t really lying.
He said:
“She’s just worried about her boyfriend” when clearly he knew that Katniss and Gale were just friends. Also, when Katniss apologizes, he all of a sudden turns cold instead of rejoicing the fact that he was going to live because of the love scandal.
These parts made me feel this way because I get the feeling that he kind of likes Katniss but can’t really say it because of the Hunger Games. I sort of know what happens in the end but not completely, therefore, what are your thoughts on the love scandal?

  1. I feel that the love scandal runs deep into their history. For example Peeta truly likes Katniss, but Katniss keeps telling herself it is just his strategy to win the games. I don't know when exactly Peeta started to develop feelings for Katniss but i think it was a little bit before he gave her the loafs of bread. I feel bad for Peeta because he could never truly have Katniss and love her because all the time Katniss would think it's a hoax. Its small moments like on page 135 where he's trying to tell her he's love is real. He can never truly come out and say he loves her because by now the games have begun it is to late. Until the new rule came along where 2 tributes can win if they're from the same districts. so yeah i get your theory maimuna and i totally agree he;s sort of being forced to behave a certain way, but deep down he still does love Katniss. :)

  2. I agree with you, Elsie, not because I had originally thought that Peeta and Katniss are meant for each other, but because of his actions during the "star crossed lovers" plan. Katniss says that Peeta is smooth with his words when talking about it to the audiences, but she isn't because, then, she didn't actually love him. This I think exposes that Peeta actually does love her from the very beginning, and now he has a chance to show it.
And when Peeta replies with "She's just worried about her boyfriend", I think it was a spark of jealousy because he thinks that Katniss had feelings for Gale.
